Crestone was incorporated in 1875. This rural mountain town
grew from a tent city in the late 1890s to one of the larger, more
prosperous towns in the state.
By 1901 the Sangre de Cristo Railroad, a subsidiary of the
Denver and Rio Grande Railroad, had a spur to Crestone. Today, the
small town is the commercial center of the area, providing services
to the community.
